For example if I find a vintage Orient watch it is usually very difficult to date the watch, and often it is not possible to even determine exactly which decade this came from. The first digit traditionally indicates the year number and the second digit the month, e.g.
April 2019. Citizen Watch Lookup Series Models ThatUnfortunately the new Seiko Five Sports series models that were relaunched from 2019 do not follow this long standing serial number convention. The Five Sports series was updated last year and can be identified by new Five logo on the dial. For example here is a serial number from a recently purchased SRPD55K1 watch - 173621. I have seen models from the new Five Sports series that have serial numbers beginning with 0, 1 and 2. While there may be some kind of logical pattern behind these, it is difficult to determine at this point due to the small sample sizes involved. ![]() It can be as simple as helping someone purchasing a watch that is associated with a specific important date for them such as a birthday. I know a number of people who have purchased models around the birth of a child with the intention to give this to them when they graduate high school or college. I also know of people who have specifically collected a model as it was tied to their own birthday. In addition to tying it to a significant date for an owner, the ability to determine a watches product date also helps collectors in a range of scenarios. By being able to narrow down a model to a specific date it can greatly assist in finding further details on a specific model. If you roughly know the year you are able to check the catalogs from that time and find details about the model. This can help to identify the authenticity of the watch and can also give insight into the original pricing, design and marketing for a model. Throughout the production life of a watch there may be a number of small production changes that take place and the serial numbers can help to identify the changes. For example a dive watch may have a number of different dial variations over time, and collectors may be aware that for example in 1976 the dial was changed from type A to type B. If this type B dial is found in a watch that has a 1973 case it would indicate that the dial may have been replaced during service. If parts and dates do not match then this can also raise concerns surrounding the authenticity of a particular example. There are some highly collectible and rare models that can be identified as only produced for a very short period of time. Again having a serial number that can be related to the model assists collectors in determining the authenticity of a model. If you know the production year for a model it can also assist in knowing where to look for details regarding spare parts, such as period specific exterior parts catalogs. In general, by having the serial number provide a method of determining the date for a unit it allows collectors to build up a much better understanding of the watches and knowledge surrounding them. Having more knowledge about a model helps to drive passion for these watches and in turn increases brand loyalty. If you compare some other brands where production dates can not be determined, as the serial numbers are either not present or do not follow a logical format, the interest in the models and brands are actually reduced.
